Mary Jane Ryan (1841-1926) married John O\u2019Neil on June 5, 1859 in St. Louis, Missouri.[1]<\/a> John O\u2019Neil is presumed to have died between 1859 and 1866.[i]<\/a> Mary Jane and John O\u2019Neil had a son, Eugene John O\u2019Neil, born March 4, 1860[2]<\/a> in St. Louis. Eugene died on March 30, 1890[3]<\/a>.[ii]<\/a><\/p>\n Daniel Hardie (1838-1916) married his second wife, Elisabeth Ferguson on April 8, 1867 in Pollokshaws, Renfrew, Scotland[4]<\/a>. They had three daughters: Janet, born September 6, 1867 in Pollokshaws[5]<\/a>; Isabella, born September 4, 1869 in Pollokshaws[6]<\/a>; and Elizabeth, born July 23, 1872 in Cincinnati, Ohio[7]<\/a>. Elizabeth Ferguson died on March 17, 1874 in Cincinnati[8]<\/a>.<\/p>\n Mary Jane (Ryan) and Daniel Hardie had their first son, Daniel Eugene Hardie, in Cincinnati on October 17, 1878[9]<\/a>. I guessed that Mary Jane and Daniel Hardie married between March 1874, when his wife died, and October 1878, when their son was born. It seemed possible that they married in Cincinnati, where both those events took place. However, Anne Lonnemann told me she believed they were married in St. Louis. Further, she thought they were next door neighbors in St. Louis prior to their marriage.<\/p>\n Records:<\/p>\n I could find no marriage record in St. Louis or Cincinnati for Daniel Hardie and either a Mary Jane Ryan or a Mary Jane O\u2019Neil. I found only one marriage record in St. Louis for a Daniel Hardie. It was between Daniel and a Mary J. Taylor in St. Louis on March 6, 1877[10]<\/a>.<\/p>\n I checked the 1877 St. Louis city directory[11]<\/a> and found the following listings:<\/p>\n Conclusion:<\/p>\n It appears that Mary Jane Ryan had another marriage between John O\u2019Neil and Daniel Hardie. It seems probable that Daniel Hardie and Mary Jane (Ryan) Taylor were married on March 6, 1877 in St. Louis by a Justice of the Peace. However, the 1866 St. Louis City Directory lists a Mary Jane O\u2019Neil, the widow of John, boarding at 52 South 7th<\/sup>, on the southwest corner of Clark Avenue. In the same directory, Mary Jane\u2019s brother, William H. Ryan is listed as working in\/operating a saloon. The address for both the saloon and William\u2019s residence is 52 South 7th<\/sup>, on the southwest corner of Clark Avenue. Also in this directory, Catherine Ryan, the widow of Patrick, is boarding at the same address. Catherine Ryan is the mother of Mary Jane and William.<\/p>\n [ii]<\/a> In his 1889 will, Eugene O\u2019Neil appointed William H. Ryan, Mary Jane\u2019s brother, as his executer. Eugene left his entire estate to William Ryan in trust for Mary J. Hardie stating: \u201cit being my object . . . to secure for my mother, after my decease, a comfortable house, and the benefit of all [my] property, goods and chattels . . . free from the interferences of her husband, or other persons\u201d.<\/p>\n [iii]<\/a> The 1877 St. Louis city directory also has a listing for Eugene J. O\u2019Neil, a clerk at Semple & Birge Manufacturing Company, who resided at either 2036 or 2636 Sarah. (The type was blurred.)
