Who was Ella Moloney?

Calvary Cemetery, St. Louis, MO

Ella Moloney is Ellen Moloney (1849-1920). She is my great-grandaunt, the younger sister of my great grandmother Mary Moloney (1844-1912), the wife of Hugh Murray.

To the best of my knowledge, her parents were Michael Moloney (c. 1812-1870+), a shoemaker born in Ireland, and Ann Geraghty or Anne Garrity (c. 1816-1895), also born in Ireland. They had 8 children: Ann (b. 1838 in NJ), Andrew (b. 1842 in NY), Mary (b. 1844 in NY), Michael (b. 1846 in CT), Ellen (b. 1849 in CT), Thomas (b. 1851 in CT), Daniel (b. 1854 in CT), and Charles (b. 1855 in CT).

When did the Moloneys move from Connecticut to Missouri?

1850: US Census lists the Moloneys as living in Harford, CT.
1855: Youngest Moloney, Charles, was born in CT.
1865: Ann Moloney buys land/building along the High Street in Potosi.
1865: Mary Moloney and Hugh Murray were married.

It appears the Moloneys moved from Connecticut to Washington County, Missouri sometime between 1855, when Charles was born in Connecticut, and 1865, when Ann Moloney bought land in Potosi, MO, and Hugh and Mary were married in St. Charles, MO.

In 1870, Ellen is living in Breton Township, Washington County, MO with her parents, Michael (a shoemaker) and Ann Moloney, and her brothers Thomas and Daniel.

1870 Census, Breton Township, Washington County, MO

To date, I have not located any records about Ellen between 1870 and 1920. The 1920 US Census, which was enumerated 06 January 1920, lists Ellen Moloney, age 70, as a resident at the Little Sisters of the Poor Home for the Aged located at 3400 South Grand Avenue in St. Louis, Missouri. Both the 1920 US census and Ellen’s MO Death Certificate list her as a single person.

Ellen died on 3 February 1920 at the age of 70 in St. Louis, Missouri. She was buried 5 February 1920 in Calvary Cemetery in the same plot as Hugh and Mary (Moloney) Murray. Ellen and Mary are the only two Moloneys buried in this plot.
