Chanute Field, Illinois
Chanute Field was established in 1917 next to Rantoul, Illinois (Champaign County) as one of the U.S. Army’s World War I aviation training fields. Over time it evolved into one of the nation’s best-known Air Force technical training bases, operating until it closed in 1993.
After WWI, the installation remained active and increasingly emphasized technical and maintenance training, a mission that would define it for decades. See the WIkipedia article about Chanute Field.
